Alistair at High School

Created by Sarah 2 years ago

I knew Alistair at school. We were both very badly bullied, and I think mostly because we were Christians and we both liked to study hard and try do well. He was exceptionally intelligent and always had a very bright and witty sense of humour!

I can still picture a scene so clearly at high school, where a young Alistair was standing looking out the classroom window. He wasn’t his usual determined, clever, cheeky, witty self that day in SU group. He had come into the lunchtime group, as though seemingly coming into a refuge. He was unusually quiet and seemed deeply frustrated and sad, I assumed with all the bullying. I was sad and concerned he was hurt. But I saw such a strength of character, a deep resolve, a quiet tenderness even then in his expression. He never gave up on his faith and worked hard to be a doctor.

Though we never knew each other well, I often think of that scene and feel infinitely proud of both that young boy and the man Alistair became. I think of the incredible impact of his life. From afar, I have seen him become a doctor, a servant hearted leader, marry the best and have amazing children, seen him pioneer up front but also love others well in secret. Alistair was special, and I think some of that is because not many knew the things this man of great character and kindness had overcome, simply because he was always focused on honouring God and lifting up and loving others.

I know the quiet choices that young man standing at the window made for God, for forgiveness and Love, lead to the man so many will be deeply thankful for and miss today. Alistair, good and faithful.

With my deepest sympathy and all my love to Sara, his boys and his whole family at this time,
